A Safer Approach to Parenting Arrangements in Cases Involving Intimate Partner Violence

Child custody decision-making in the context of allegations of intimate partner violence can be challenging.  Family Court practitioners simultaneously seek to promote the safety and wellbeing of children and their battered parents while respecting the rights and interests of parents who are accused of DV and/or unjustifiably estranged from their children.  This workshop introduces practitioners to a four-pronged approach known as “SAF^eR” which can assist in decision-making in IPV-related cases. The SAF^eR approach can be utilized by any family court practitioner in order to produce safer, more workable outcomes in IPV-involved parenting disputes.

Presenter: Loretta Frederick, JD, has served as Senior Legal and Policy Advisor of the Battered Women’s Justice Project since 1996. The focus of her current work is improving the capacity of family courts to identify and account for domestic violence in child custody cases.

Stepping-up Parenting Time: When and How to Determine the Right Time

As children grow and family circumstances change, often the less-seen parent desires a modification in the parenting plan that will allow him/her to have more parenting time.  This presentation introduces a chart that specifies family domains, questions, and concerns as a tool for integrating family data to support child-centered decision making. We will discuss how the chart organizes clinical information and research about child development and family dynamics to facilitate decisions that support children’s well-being while considering parents’ goals to spend time with their children.

Presenters:

Marsha Kline Pruett, PhD, ABPP is a psychologist with masters’ degrees in law and in education. She is the Maconda Brown O’Connor Professor at Smith College School for Social Work. With twenty-five years of clinical experience, her expertise includes couples counseling and consultation, father involvement, co-parenting, child development, mediation, legal case development for attorneys, mediation, and collaborative divorce.

Leslie Drozd, PhD, is a psychologist in independent practice in Newport Beach, California in clinical and forensic psychology with expertise in family violence, alienation, gatekeeping, child abuse, and substance abuse. She has co-authored a myriad of peer-reviewed articles and chapters in these areas of expertise. She serves as a forensic consultant, expert witness, reviewing expert, and child custody evaluator and as a clinician working with families with resist refuse dynamics.
