DV Symposium November 15, 2019 – 8:30am to 5:00pm Early bird $95 + HST per person until October 29th, after that date $100 + HST per person.

About this Event

The Peel Family Mediation Service’s annual domestic violence symposium focuses on professional development education and training on intimate partner violence (IPV). The event is attended each year by professionals across the GTA and Ontario. The thematic objective of this year’s symposium is “Viewing Violence and Power Through A Cultural Lens”. The 8th annual symposium will feature an exciting array of speakers and provide participants with global, national and regional perspectives on IPV.

Speakers include:

“The Federal Government’s Horizontal Initiative to Prevent and Address Gender-Based Violence”, Hoori Hamboyan, Manager Policy, Policy and External Relations Directorate, Government of Canada, Women and Gender Equity Canada (formerly Status of Women Canada)

“Why Canadian IPV Initiatives Matter Internationally”, Mina Vaish and Archana Medhekar, United Nations Working Group, Mediators Beyond Borders International (NGO Special Consultative Status- ECOSOC UN), Review of high-level points from the UN Special Rapporteur’s Report on Visit to Canada (Violence Against Women) plus, making the link between Canadian IPV initiatives and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal number 5 and Canada’s world rankings on the Women Peace and Security Index.

“Untying the Knot- A Path to Empowerment After Violence: Shedding Patriarchal and Cultural Chains” , Zana Shammi (Film Director) and Lorris Herenda, Executive Director of Yellow Brick House, Film excerpt screening of “Untying the Knot” and Panel Discussion, (to be featured in full on the CBC Documentary Channel on November 24, 2019)

“Smart, Successful and Abused: The Unspoken Problem of Domestic Violence and High-Achieving Women”, Dr. Angela Mailis, MD. A special speaking event by author and physician Dr. Angela Mailis featuring her findings on domestic violence, followed by a moderated audience discussion and book signing

An Interactive Theatre Performance

“Diversity and Inclusion Challenges”. A vibrant panel debate and discussion on diversity and inclusion challenges for professionals.Also featuring:

A silent auction, networking opportunities and community booths, lunchtime musical performance by Kenn Lewis Steel Drum Band and a delicious lunch by Mandarin.

RATES:

$95/person + HST- Early Registration by October 29th

After October 29th rate goes up to $100/person + HST

Group registration – $95/person + HST for groups of 5-15 individuals until November 12th

The symposium meets Ministry of Attorney General mediator/IRC required training for 5 hours DV training and 2 hours inclusion and diversity training.
