The Honour Symposium, Alternative Supportive Options for Conscious Uncoupling is a one-day mini-forum that will take place at the Masonic Concert Hall in Stratford, Ontario. Attendees are lawyers, mediators, and mental health professionals who are, or wish to be, supportive of separating couples through conscious, alternative processes that minimize conflict and encourage growth and optimum communication. Through a variety of presentations and workshops the symposium will provide an opportunity for discussion of the emotional challenges people face and how alternative conflict resolution processes can make the experience more bearable, productive, and cost-efficient.
The Honour Symposium centers around an afternoon performance of the play, Honour, written by acclaimed Australian playwright, Joanna Murray-Smith. After 32 years of marriage, husband George, suddenly announces to his wife, Honor, that he is leaving her for a much younger woman. The play explores the perspective of the four characters, husband, wife, daughter, and “the other woman”, as they each navigate this traumatic event. The play is being presented as a tool to initiate discussion about the emotional fall out of separation and how alternative conflict resolution processes can benefit clients and their families. A panel discussion will follow the performance with input from mediators, The Honourable Mary Jo Nolan, Hilary Linton, Alf Mamo, as well as collaborative lawyer David Morneau, and mental health professional Linda Mackay and who provides support to separating couples in a variety of ways.
The balance of the one-day program will feature a keynote address by former Grand Council Chief John Beaucage as well as presentations by speakers and workshop leaders who bring an alternative approach to the resolution of family conflicts. Workshops and presentations will include improvisation, role-playing, and breath and mindfulness techniques for more successful mediation, collaborative law, re-integration counselling, and parenting coordination sessions.
