AFCC-O News From 2014
The Honourable Debra Paulseth served as President in 2014, and Dr. Rachel Birnbaum served as President-elect. As of November 1, 2014 AFCC-O had 433 members.
In 2014, AFCC-O held several Chapter Conferences and events on topical issues, which took place throughout the province, including:
- In February, the Kingston Group held an event at Queens University entitled “High Conflict Separations & Risk of Emotional Harm to Children”;
- In April 2014, a program was held in Milton “How to Maximize Client Satisfaction & Avoid Complaints from Initial Retainer to Final Account”;
- In October 2014, the Kingston Group held an event “Parenting Plans: Why & How to Make Them”; and
- The 6th AGM & Annual Conference took place in London, the subject of which was “Special Issues Facing Family Courts”—such as special needs children, mental health and addiction. Justice Mary Lou Benotto of the Ontario Court of Appeal delivered the Welcoming Address; and In November 2014, a Toronto Social and Educational Event took place, “Perinatal, Post-Partum and Maternal Depression: Understanding and Addressing the Challenges”.
The Parenting Capacity Assessors Working Group continued to meet regarding important concerns. The second Walsh Family Law Moot took place in March 2014. In May 2014, Toronto hosted the AFCC 51st Annual Conference, as well as an Ontario Chapter Reception.
In addition to all of the foregoing education, collaboration and contribution, AFCC-O published newsletters in the Spring and the Fall. Production of a DVD on Adult Children of Divorce was in the works.
As we approach our 10th anniversary celebrations, we reflect proudly on our past accomplishments and we acknowledge the work of our tireless volunteers and members who have made those achievements possible. We thank you for your many nominations of outstanding candidates to be honoured. The award recipients have now been selected, details below.
