AFCC-O News From 2017

Andrea Himel became past president, with Justice Gerri Wong taking on the President’s role for the Ontario Chapter of AFCC. Dr. Dan Ashbourne moved into the role of President Elect that same year, with Brian Burke as Vice President and Treasurer.

The two-year research project on mediation commenced for the chapter by Drs. Rachel Birnbaum and Denise Whitehead.

Educational events continued to be offered in the eastern Ontario area in Kingston and the western area in Windsor, with a Fall event added at the law school for Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Dr. Marsha Kline-Pruett spoke at a membership drive educational in-service in Windsor in March of 2017, which helped the Ontario Chapter win the competition for membership growth across the various chapters of AFCC, and AFCC-O received $2,500.00.

The annual AFCC conference was held in Boston: many of our members were presenters at the conference and many more were able to attend and connect with old friends and colleagues and meet new friends. Brian Burke and Nick Bala organized a chapter reception for those able to attend in Boston.

Past AFCC-O President, Justice Craig Perkins retired from the Superior Court, and once again gave a nod to our chapter and the work we do with a request that donations be directed to AFCC-O [the donations were used to fund an additional student scholarship (2 in total) to attend our 2018 10th Annual Conference].

Finally, the two-year efforts of the small committee spearheaded by Justice Gerri Wong working on the Board of Directors orientation, and Board manual was finished and provided to all Board Members in the Spring of 2017. Annual updates are maintained, and a history of the chapter and timeline will also be included.
